Japan has 47 prefectures and each prefecture has the characteristics.
If you visit Kyoto, you can feel the traditional atmosphere of the city and you also enjoy the traditional food.
On the other hand, if you visit Tokyo, you can feel the modern atmosphere, and also a great option for those looking to purchase anime merchandise!
Japan is divided into seven regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai (or Kinki), Chugoku & Shikoku, and Kyushu. Each region has its own unique characteristics, and I’ll share a bit about each of them.
Hokkaido
Japan’s northernmost island, known for its stunning natural landscapes, including vast plains, mountains, and hot springs.
Hokkaido is famous for its ski resorts, such as Niseko, and its beautiful flower fields in Furano. The region also offers delicious seafood and dairy products.
Tohoku
Located in the northeastern part of Honshu, Tohoku is known for its rugged terrain, hot springs, and traditional festivals.
The region offers beautiful natural scenery, including mountains, lakes, and rivers, as well as rich cultural experiences.
Kanto
This region includes Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures, making it the most populous and economically significant area in Japan. Kanto offers a mix of modern urban experiences and historical sites.
Chubu
Located in central Honshu, Chubu is characterized by its diverse landscape, including the Japanese Alps, beautiful coastlines, and historical towns. The region is also known for its hot springs and traditional crafts.
Kansai
This region includes major cultural and historical centers such as Kyoto and Osaka. Kansai is known for its rich heritage, historic temples, and vibrant urban culture. It’s a hub of traditional Japanese culture and modern entertainment.
Chugoku & Shikoku
Chugoku covers the western part of Honshu and Shikoku is a smaller island south of it. Both regions are known for their beautiful coastal landscapes, historical sites, and traditional culture.
Kyushu
Located in the southwest, Kyushu is known for its volcanic activity, hot springs, and unique cultural heritage. The region offers a mix of modern cities and natural wonders.
