Shimokitazawa is a cool Tokyo neighborhood with a retro vibe, called “vintage paradise”. it is full of music, art and a warm atmosphere that attracts people of all ages.
It’s not only famous for its amazing vintage shops but also for its many curry restaurants. Narrow streets and small buildings are packed with one-of-a-kind vintage stores, vintage fashion lovers come from all over to shop here. Let’s get into the best vintage shops in Shimokitazawa and have some fun shopping in this iconic area!
Yoyogi-Uehara, about a 20-minute walk from Shimokitazawa, is one of my personal favorite spots. Not only does it have plenty of great restaurants, but starting the day with coffee and fresh bread from a café there used to be part of my morning routine. Be sure to check it out too!

Why Shimokitazawa is Perfect for Vintage Shopping
Shimokitazawa’s vintage shops offer a unique selection of one-of-a-kind items you won’t easily find in other areas. From American vintage and European classics to retro Japanese styles, the shops here have a wide variety of vintage clothing that appeals to all tastes.
This amazing selection has made Shimokitazawa a must-visit for fashion lovers from around the world who come to hunt for unique pieces they can’t find anywhere else.
If you’re looking for brand-new clothes or high-end vintage items, I recommend going to Harajuku. Known as Japan’s fashion mecca, Harajuku offers everything from high-end designer brands to casual wear, with a wide variety to choose from. Be sure to check it out as well! You can learn more about Harajuku [here].
How to Access Shimokitazawa
Shimokitazawa is conveniently served by two train lines: the Keio Inokashira Line and the Odakyu Line, making it a lively hub with plenty of visitors. If you’re coming from Shinjuku, you can take the Odakyu Line directly to Shimokitazawa. The “Rapid Express” train takes you there in just two stops from Shinjuku, so it’s quick and easy to reach. For those coming from Shibuya, the Keio Inokashira Line is your best option. Express trains also stop at Shimokitazawa, so you can hop on any train and arrive in no time!
When heading to Shimokitazawa, I recommend not buying a day pass, as these can vary by train company and may not be the best value. For example, if you’re taking the Odakyu Line, you can also enjoy nearby areas like Yoyogi-Uehara, which is close enough to walk to. So instead of getting a day pass, just use a Pasmo or Suica card for more flexibility!

My Recommended Restaurants in Shimokitazawa
I used to work in Shimokitazawa, so I know a few great restaurants there. Like I mentioned, Shimokitazawa is especially famous for its curry and is considered a “curry haven,” just like it’s known for vintage clothing. Japanese curry is different from curry in other countries—it’s not too spicy and has a unique balance of sweetness and mild heat that makes it really delicious. But Shimokitazawa also has spicier, more intense curry options as well, so be sure to try those too!
Additionally, Mikan Shimokita, located at the Shimokitazawa Station, has a lot of stylish restaurants and bookstores, offering a variety of food from around the world. Be sure to check that out as well!
Curry Spice Gelateria KALSPARI
This restaurant is famous for its spice-rich curries and was even chosen as one of the top 100 places on a popular Japanese website. You can enjoy a variety of spice-forward curries, and they even have a menu where you can try three different types at once. Be sure to check it out!
Kyuyam-tei Shimokita-sou
This restaurant is also a well-known curry spot, just like the one mentioned above. It’s so popular that there’s often a long line on weekends. They’re famous for their keema curry, a minced meat curry, and they even offer a unique oyster curry. Definitely give it a try!
Flippers Shimokitazawa
This is a pancake shop with several locations around Tokyo. When you think of pancakes, you might picture the kind usually eaten for breakfast, but this place is known for its fluffy, cloud-like pancakes, which are very popular with international visitors. They offer unique options like pancakes with matcha sauce and seasonal ones topped with strawberries sourced from famous regions in Japan. Definitely give it a try!
Men to Mirai
Lastly, there’s a ramen shop that’s so popular it has lines not only on weekends but also on weekdays. This ramen shop is a bit different from the usual; it features extra-thick, chewy noodles that give it a unique texture.
